Length of Treatment
The length of treatment is based on the complexity of the tooth movement that is required. For most patients, orthodontic treatment takes between 18 and 24 months, though minor tooth movement with clear aligners may take as little as six months. During your complimentary exam with Dr. Brian Smith or Dr. Lynn Smith at our Sanford orthodontic office, we will discuss your needs and the length of treatment necessary to meet your smile goals.
No matter the type of treatment, we like to see our patients every five to six weeks. By seeing patients on a regular basis, we are able to closely monitor their oral hygiene and treatment progress.
Treatment Options
For the prospective orthodontic patient today, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. Which braces are best? Which treatments provide the most efficient outcomes? At Smith and Smith Orthodontics, we never confuse science with marketing. You will only receive an honest assessment of your orthodontic options, and that is based on current scientific research. Dr. Smith works very hard to stay at the forefront of the field and will only provide treatment that has been proven to be safe, effective, and stable in the long run.
At your consultation with Dr. Smith, he will discuss which options are most appropriate for you or your child's situation. While braces offer excellent three dimensional control over tooth position and are usually the best option for children and adolescents, sometimes adults are looking for a more esthetic solution like Invisalign. And for some cases a simple retainer can provide the desired tooth movement.
Self-Ligating Braces
We proudly feature Empower® self-ligating braces from American Orthodontics. Empower braces are the only self ligating braces made in the U.S., which means excellent materials, precision, and craftsmanship go into your orthodontic treatment. Self-ligating braces have an integrated clip, or door, that secures the archwire. Self-ligating braces can allow for more efficient tooth movement and can reduce the need for extraction of permanent teeth. Additionally, Empower braces can enhance oral hygiene and the brackets' rounded edges create a more comfortable experience for our patients. Unlike other bracket systems on the market, the Empower bracket also allows for very precise control of tooth position which means Dr. Smith can ensure that your smile is outstanding!
We also use high-quality archwires that are made in the USA and provide light continuous forces to move teeth. Light forces are the best way to move teeth, and cause minimal discomfort for our patients. The archwires are the key component in orthodontic treatment.
Clear (Ceramic) Braces
Ceramic braces are a clear alternative to metal braces. They work the same way as metal braces, and provide the same treatment outcome, just in a more aesthetic manner. Many of our adult patients choose the ceramic brackets, although some teens also prefer them. Our ceramic braces are made in the USA by American Orthodontics, and are the best-looking ceramic braces on the market!
Clear Aligners
Clear aligner therapy uses a series of aligners, rather than braces, to move teeth. We use Invisalign® for comprehensive tooth movement cases, as well as Red, White and Blue aligners for more limited tooth movement. Clear aligners can be more comfortable than braces, are highly aesthetic, and are removed for eating, brushing, and flossing. Clear aligners are best for the dedicated adult patient who does not want to wear braces but wants a beautiful smile.
